Description: This part is a triple roller type chain and is used on the vertical axis of a S/RM as a part of the hoist mechanism. It is driven by gear motors and supports the vertical lift station's (VLS) weight and movement.

Why it’s important: This is one of the most important parts of the hoist mechanism and is crucial to operation. Due to the extreme forces seen on the chain as it moves up and down, while supporting the weight of the VLS and product weight, any wear or damage could lead to catastrophic failure and leave the S/RM in a down condition if not addressed. A damaged or worn chain can also cause positioning issues causing the S/RM to E-Stop for chain related faults.

Recommendation: Proper maintenance of the vertical lifting chain is essential to achieve the longest wear life and avoid any premature failures or emergency events. The two most simple, yet most important, things to remember for maintenance is proper lubrication and proper tension. When inspecting the chain, check it for stretch. Stretch is a natural occurrence as the chain wears and is a good indicator of chain life. Also, make sure the chain does not show excessive twisting or camber, which would be a sign of over-stretch and other issues. The chain should appear straight over its distance between the VLS and sprockets. Refer to your S/RM manual for recommended maintenance intervals and procedures. Westfalia also strongly recommends purchasing some spare chain and master links in the case of a failure for quick repair.

Description: This part is used in the vertical lift station (VLS) hydraulic brake system.  These hoses route pressurized hydraulic fluid from the pump to the brake assemblies. A variety of lengths and fittings can be found based on location and specifications of the S/RM.

Why it is important: The brake system is a vital part of the VLS operation. It not only is designed to hold the VLS in place during critical functions, but it also acts as a safety device by activating in an emergency situation. The brake system needs to hold a large amount of weight, especially when loaded with product. This means the brakes need to exert a large amount of clamping power to accomplish this. Typically, the pressure exceeds 1500psi. The hoses are designed to handle the extremely high pressure, but they can wear and fail just like any other part. A failure of the hose would likely be in the form of a leak due to deteriorated rubber over time or a defect. Any leak will compromise brake operation by reducing pressure in the system, but it will also cause quite a mess with hydraulic fluid exiting the system.

Recommendation: Keep a few hoses in stock for quick response in the case that worn or damaged hoses are discovered. You will typically check the hoses while inspecting the rest of the hydraulic brake system during scheduled preventative maintenance. Look for leaks in the hose and fittings. Check the condition of the hose and make sure the rubber is in good shape with no noticeable dry rotting or cracking. Replace the hose if you find any issue to avoid a complete failure. Refer to your manual for recommended maintenance intervals specific to your S/RM.

Upper Sprocket Assembly

Description: This part is an upper sprocket assembly found on a S/RM and is considered a key part of the vertical hoist mechanism. A S/RM is typically found with two upper and two lower assemblies. While the lower assemblies are actually driven by electric gear motors in order to move the chains, the upper assemblies act as an idler and support for the chains within this hoisting function.  

Why it’s important: All the sprockets, including the chains, are vital to the operation of the hoist mechanism, which supports the movement of the Vertical Lift Station to lift product to the different levels and positions of a storage rack. There is a large amount of weight and load on the different components of the hoist mechanism, which exposes the sprockets to the same stress and makes it critical to the operation. A damaged or worn assembly, which can contain multiple parts, can cause premature failure of the chain or other components within the chain drive. Wear or damage is typically found in the form of deformed or worn sprocket teeth, bearings that are seized or falling apart, or leaking grease seals.

Recommendation: With proper maintenance and care, these assemblies along with the other chain drive components, will give you hassle free operation. A key way to maintain these assemblies is to make sure the chains are adequately lubricated, as well as tensioned. Be sure that the sprocket assemblies have fresh grease in them. Some assemblies require hand-packing grease and others have a grease fitting (as pictured) for use of a grease gun. In some cases, you may have a sealed type bearing. If these are found to be leaking, they should be replaced. Follow the maintenance intervals recommended in your S/RM manual for knowledge on when to carry out these functions. In the case that a sprocket assembly is found to be damaged or worn, it is vital that they be addressed immediately in order to preserve other components of the chain drive and avoid further damage and downtime. Due to the critical nature of this item, we recommend that all customers keep one or two of these assemblies on-hand for a quick turn-around if one has failed.

Powerbus Collector Shoe

Description: This part is actually directly related to and included within the Powerbus Collector Arm Assembly, which we showcased last month. The powerbus collector shoe is made up of a copper brush (or insert as some may call it) and surrounded by a plastic insulation. The power wires from the S/RM get connected to the powerbus collector arm via wire terminals on the collector shoe. As the S/RM moves horizontally in an aisle, these collector shoes slide back and forth in the powerbus rail, maintaining contact and the power connection to the S/RM.

Why it’s important: Just as it is important that the collector arms are working properly to maintain a power connection to the S/RM, it is important that the collector shoes are in good operating condition and are making good contact with the power rails. As the shoe wears, the copper brush wears down and loses material. Once the copper is depleted, there is no longer a way to maintain proper connection to the power rail, and this can present connection issues that cause the S/RM to fault or lose power. Losing a proper connection can also cause a rise in electrical resistance, which causes heat that can burn or melt other components.

Recommendation: Since this item inherently works under friction from the sliding motion in the power rails, there is a high potential for wear. We recommend that customers keep at least a one set of these shoes on hand for an S/RM.  Be sure to inspect these collector shoes as a part of any preventative maintenance on the S/RM.

Powerbus Collector Arm Assembly

Description: This part acts as the contact point to the powerbus rails (electric source) for equipment, such as an S/RM or a T-car. You will typically find a few of these bundled together to make connection to every pole of the powerbus rail system. The power is transferred from the powerbus rail, through these collector arms, and into the equipment. The collector arm can travel with the equipment and is equipped with spring loaded, pivoting arms to ensure a constant and proper connection to the powerbus rails.

Why it is Important: No power = No operation. This component is one of the top wear parts in the power supply system since it has moving parts that will wear over time. This part is also prone to damage from exposure to aisle debris. If the collector loses contact with the rail or even loses the correct amount of contact pressure, the power voltage can be affected and cause the equipment to malfunction. In some cases, losing contact can cause overheating (resistance) in the collector arm/rail and cause certain components to burn or melt.

Recommendation: It’s a good idea to inspect the collector arms, as well as the other powerbus components as a part of your preventative maintenance service. Inspect the arms for damage or wear. Ensure that the collector shoes are in good operating condition. These collector shoes will be replaced most often because the copper will wear down due to sliding back and forth in the rails. Collector arm components, such as the springs and collector shoes can be replaced separately if needed.

Satellite Cable Swivel Bracket Assembly

Description: This part acts as the mechanical and electrical connection point for a satellite cable to the satellite assembly.

Why it’s Important: This part is responsible for a key role in the Satellite function – maintaining an electrical connection between the satellite cable and the Satellite itself. While it is carrying out this function, it is also working to hold/clamp the Satellite cable and keep it physically connected to the Satellite. Due to the changes in direction of the Satellite, this part needs to be able to move or “swivel” to help keep the Satellite cable straight and avoid any bending or kinking of the cable.  Bending or kinking of the cable could cause premature wear and/or damage.

Recommendation: It’s a good idea to check this part when inspecting the satellite cable and related components. While the swivel bracket itself is relatively robust, the small energy chain and wires typically wear and need to be replaced. These items are available separately.

Description: Ultra High-Molecular-Weight (UHMW) plates that mount to the vertical lift station (VLS) and help guide the vertical lift chain as the VLS moves up and down.

Why it’s important: The main purpose of this guide is to keep the chain straight as it moves beside the VLS and prevents it from hitting the lift station, which could cause damage to the VLS and/or chain. It is made of oil impregnated UHMW to ensure the chain has easy and smooth movement over the guide via the built in lubrication.

Recommendation: These guides will become grooved and worn from continued use. It is a great idea to check these when performing preventative maintenance on the S/RM, especially when lubricating the vertical lift chains. If found to be worn, replace them to ensure continued and proper operation.

Description: This assembly transmits power from the drive gears in the Satellite out to the wheel included to move the Satellite and also supports the Satellite and its load. There are typically many of these found in a Satellite assembly.

Why it is important: The movement of the Satellite depends on its proper function and operation, any damage could cause your Satellite to become immobile. There are many of these found on a Satellite and they all work together as a part of the same drive system. For example, if the assembly were to bind or “lock up”, this can cause damage to the other drive system components. In another example, if the wheel or the mounting hub were to fail, the assembly cannot properly support weight or provide traction to move the Satellite.

Recommendation: Since most Satellite applications have many of these assemblies, it’s a good idea to keep a few spares around. Considering the amount of movement this part sees, it’s also labeled as a wear item and needs proper care to prolong it’s life expectancy. The parts that make up these assemblies can be purchased individually; the wheel by itself is replaced most often due to the abuse it sees making contact with the profile rails. The needle bearings in this assembly should be checked and replaced periodically as well. Keep the gears well lubricated to prevent damage. Refer to your S/RM manual for maintenance intervals you should follow to ensure proper function.

Description: A wear strip made of oil impregnated UHMW that mounts in the home station of an S/RM lift station. It makes contact with the satellite cable as it is fed from the cable drum while the Satellite assembly travels into a storage rack to retrieve/store pallets.

Why it is important: This wear strip ensures that the satellite cable moves freely with the Satellite during operation while spooling properly on the cable drum. When the wear strip becomes worn, the satellite cable will wear faster or become damaged. It addition to causing premature wear to a cable, any grooves in the curved wear strip can prevent the cable from spooling up on the cable drum properly, in turn creating an issue with the cable drum as well.

Recommendations: Considering the relatively low cost of these wear strips vs. a satellite cable and cable drum, it is very beneficial to make sure that these wear strips are in good operating condition. Look to make sure they are clean and without damage, such as grooving. Maintenance intervals for checking these depend on the ambient conditions of your warehouse. Refer to your S/RM Manual for more information.

Description: This istem is an eccentric follower designed to maintain the horizontal tracking at the mid and upper levels of an S/RM.

Why it is important: The S/RM stands vertically as it moves across it’s horizontal plane. It order for these tall pieces of equipment to stay completely perpendicular to the floor, it must be supported at the top while allowing it to move freely. These guide wheels help These guide wheels help the S/RM do just that by use if a guide rail mounted at the upper level of the racking. They are adjustable and allow for fine positioning. If these wheels are our of adjustment or worn/damaged, the top of an S/RM will be able to move in a lateral motion and out of alignment. This could result in a collision with other system components and issues with positioning of the S/RM when carrying out certain functions.

Recommendation: Follow the maintenance intervals and adjustment procedures stated in your service manual for these guide wheels. If a wheel is found to be damaged (i.e. rubber coating is chipped/missing, does not spin freely, doesn’t adjust properly), it should be replaced immediately. This part is a wear item and it will need attention periodically. It’s also a good idea to keep a unit or two on the shelf just in case of a failure.

Description: This part is a pump that creates the pressure required to operate the hydraulic brake system on the vertical lift station of an S/RM.

Why it is important: This is the heart of the hydraulic brake system. Without it, you could not pressurize the system and therefore, you could not properly activate the brakes to hold the lift station in position during critical operations. If the lift station cannot position properly, there could be a collision between other components of the S/RM, causing damage.

Recommendation: While the hydraulic pump unit has a reputation for being quite reliable, it still requires some preventative and routine maintenance to ensure the longest life span possible. These actions include checking for leaks in the hydraulic system, keeping the pump’s fluid reservoir at the proper level (use WTI recommended fluid), and maintaining the proper system pressure. Follow your service manual for maintenance intervals and instruction for doing so. Due to the critical role this pump has in the system operation, we recommend keeping a spare unit on your shelf for a quick turnaround and minimal downtime.

Description: This spare part consists of a sprocket, shaft, distance bushing, pedestal bearing, and keys. This assembly is found at the lower part of an S/RM and is used to transmit power from the vertical gearmotor assemblies to the vertical chain that hoists the lift station up and down.

Why it is important: If you cannot power the lift station up and down on the vertical axis, you cannot transfer product to the different levels of your storage rack in your warehouse. This assembly is vital to the operation of the hoist mechanism and is why we consider it a “critical” component. Since the lift station and its load create some of the highest operating stresses to the components helping to lift it, said components are subject to serious wear and tear, especially if left unmaintained.

Recommendation: Westfalia recommends that you inspect and maintain all parts of the hoist mechanism, specifically the chains and sprocket assemblies, along with related hardware. These items mate together and therefore, wear together. If a chain becomes compromised, sprockets can and likely will follow accordingly or vice versa. Keep your chains adequately lubricated and this will ensure they roll around the sprockets with ease. Check the teeth profiles on the sprockets for abnormal wear or grooving. Any noticeable wear or damage should be addressed and you should contact the Westfalia Service team for support. Since this assembly is considered critical, we strongly recommend keeping an assembly on-hand in your inventory in case of a failure, which would leave your system down. This will make sure you are back up and running as quickly as possible.

Description: The tensioner is the connection point for the hoisting chain to the vertical lift station. This assembly, which also uses compression springs (purchased separately), allows movement of the chain connection under a specific tension as the lift station travels up and down within the S/RM.

Why it’s important: If the chain connection point was unable to move under the varying tension of the chain, this force would be transferred to the chain itself, therefore prematurely wearing the chain and/or sprockets. This wear could be seen as a chain stretch or break. This could also cause worn sprockets, which would be expensive for labor and downtime to replace the wrn components. It is essential that the tension is correct to ensure proper function.

Recommendation: Make sure the tensioners and components are adjusted correctly per the procedures in your S/RM manual. Inspect the tensioners for wear and fatigue. If any noticeable wear is found, they should be replaced with new units to ensure full life of the chain and other expensive hoist components. Since this can be considered a wear item on an S/RM, we recommend keeping one or two new ones on the shelf in case of a failure. It is also recommended that these tensioners be replaced when replacing the chain.

Description: This item is a heavy duty pedestal bearing.  It supports the lower vertical driveshaft assembly that drives the S/RM’s lift station on the vertical axis.

Why it’s important: Since the vertical drivetrain can see the highest loads and stress due to the weight of product being moved up and down on the lift station, this bearing is exposed to these conditions as well. It is responsible for keeping the vertical driveshaft supported and in position as it rotates, driving the chain that carries the lift station. If this bearing was to fail (i.e. come apart, seize, etc.), it could allow the shaft to become unsupported and move out of alignment, causing major wear and/or damage to the chain and related drive components. Failure would most definitely create downtime for the S/RM.

Recommendation: This bearing should be inspected and lubricated per the maintenance intervals stated in your SRM manual, or roughly every 50-250 operating hours based on the ambient conditions of your warehouse. Lack of lubrication could be considered the common cause of failure, so be sure to keep that in mind as you organize and execute your maintenance to ensure a smooth running SRM. Same can be said about any part that requires lubrication! These bearings are considered a critical spare part in case of a failure, so we also recommend that you keep a fresh unit or two on the shelf just in case.

Description: This item is a switch which senses the presence of a magnet to open and/or close a circuit, commonly used for positioning and speed monitoring functions on an S/RM.

Why it’s important: This switch is essential for the S/RM control system to be able to tell when different components are in position or how fast components are moving. Examples of this would be the position of the Satellite when it has returned from retrieving a pallet or the speed of the Vertical Lift Station. Without this switch, system components could crash into one another, create faults due to equipment not being in position or move beyond the desired speed to operate properly.

Recommendation: Keep a few on-hand in case of a failure. They can be commonly found across an S/RM and because of this, it can be a common replacement item. They are relatively easy to replace, so when a failure occurs you’ll be happy to have it and keep downtime to a minimum.

Hydraulic Pressure Switch,

Description: This item is located on an S/RM and is an electrical switch that opens and closes based on the hydraulic system pressure. The Hydraulic system pressure sends a signal to the control PLC, so it can turn on or shut off the pump to maintain a certain pressure range, which can be set by this adjustable switch.

Why it’s Important: If the switch does not operate as it should, the hydraulic system would not maintain proper pressure and the vertical brakes on the lift station of an S/RM would not operate properly. This would not only cause operational issues for the entire SRM, but could potentially be a safety hazard as the brakes are meant to hold the lift station in place and prevent it from moving or dropping while carrying out certain functions.

Recommendation: Typically, a bad switch will result in the hydraulic pump either not turning on or not turning off, which would result in improper pressure regulation. Replacement should happen immediately to ensure the hydraulic system and SRM is operating at 100%. This is a relatively low cost item worthy of keeping on your shelf in case of a failure.

Vertical Lift Station Side Guide Wheel

Description: A metal wheel that is mounted to the lift station of an S/RM and makes contact with the guide bar, which is mounted to the masts of the S/RM. The purpose of the wheel is to keep the lift station in alignment as it travels on the vertical axis. Once properly adjusted, it uses the contact with the profile of the guide bar on the mast to track properly within the S/RM.

Why it’s important: When this item is out of adjustment or has failed, the lift station could begin traveling out of alignment and induce stress or load on other hoist components, as well as the other side guide wheels that you will find on a lift station (normally eight on a vertical lift station). This will inevitably lead to premature failure of other components, as well as misalignment of the lift station when attempting to line up with the rack for discharge of the satellite or fork system.

Recommendation: Follow your S/RM manual and maintenance intervals to check these wheels and ensure they are within spec and adjustment for proper operation. Do not hesitate to replace a damaged and/or worn wheel if discovered. We recommend keeping one or two on hand in case of a failure. Horizontal/Vertical Travel Safety Limit Switch,

Description: This limit switch tells the S/RM control when the vertical (Lift Station) or horizontal (entire S/RM) axis is at its furthest most traveling limit. It does this by way of a mechanical arm that makes contact with a bracket designed specifically for this purpose. The arm moves and activates the switch, which sends a signal to the S/RM control telling it that is at its limit and to stop immediately.

Why it’s important: The operation is simple, but the importance is high for this small item. When the S/RM is traveling towards the end of its mechanical  limit on either the vertical or horizontal axis, this switch is mounted just within that limit to prevent a crash situation or damage by stopping the S/RM before it gets there. Not only is this important to maintain a reliable S/RM, but it is important for safety as well. A crash could be dangerous for anyone around, as this equipment can be quite large and can move very quickly.

Recommendation: These switches do wear out over time. It’s important to check their function and adjustment during a preventative maintenance or when possible. Keep a spare on hand in case you do diagnose a bad switch and replace as soon as possible. Follow the instructions in your S/RM manual for more detailed steps on these limit switches. Description: This item is mounted to the side plate of the Satellite. It maintains tracking of the Satellite through the rack and as it rotates, cleans the profile rails where the wheels travel.

Why it’s important: This dual purpose item keeps the Satellite moving straight through the rack and keeps the Satellite wheel face from contacting the sides of the rails and prevents damage. While doing this function, the brush material on the bottom side moves debris and material from the Satellite wheel contact area on the rail to ensure smooth transportation and again, preventing damage to the wheels. Since the weight of the product being transferred in and out of the rack can be substantial, the Satellite wheels need to operate smoothly.

Recommendation: This is a common wear component, yet low cost and can save your Satellite from more costly repairs. Westfalia recommends checking these wheel/brush assemblies to ensure they spin properly and that the brushes are clean and brush material is intact. You may buy this wheel/brush without the mounting bracket or bearing if they are determined to be in good condition for additional cost savings.

Description: This item, composed of either steel or oil impregnated ultra high molecular weight plastic (UHMW), is a replaceable grooved surface which the satellite chains move within as they work to move pallets on and off the satellite assembly.

Why it’s important: These guides are located specifically where the pallets will contact the chain. Because of this, the chains can see a lot of abuse from pallets as the Satellite travels under them to retrieve and transport to the Home Station of an SRM. The guide maintains the chains alignment between sprockets to ensure the chain cannot “jump” off of a sprocket and potentially damage the chain drive mechanism. The guides also utilizes a groove which matches the shape and size of the chain to ensure the weight being placed on it is balanced. This, in turn, maximizes wear life of the chain.

Recommendation: This is a common wear component and should be checked along with the chain during preventative maintenance of the satellites. You want to check for minimum thickness of the guide itself (do not include the thickness of the receiving bracket it bolts to. Typically, you want 4mm+ of thickness.), but also check for any defects that would stop the chain from traveling smoothly across the guide. Refer to your S/RM manual for specific dimensions related to your S/RM satellite.   We also recommend having one or two on hand to ensure a speedy replacement if one is extremely worn or needs replaced. A failling guide could lead to other damage and should be replaced as soon as possible.

Description: The purpose of this item is sense the presence of an obstruction outside the limits of the Lift Station. If something is physically blocking the sensor from seeing the reflective surface at the other side, the sensor sends a signal telling the S/RM to emergency stop and generates a fault code telling the system operator what has happened.

Why it’s important: Sometimes, items on the pallets, or even the pallets themselves, can manage to not completely move on to the lift station of the S/RM when being transported from the rack where it was stored. This creates a hazard, as this object could now be on a collision course with other objects(mainly the rack) as the S/RM travels on its horizontal and vertical axis. This would create a “crash” scenario and potentially cause major damage to both the S/RM and the product it is transporting. These sensors ensure that this does not happen by stopping the S/RM and informing the operator of the obstruction via a fault code.

Recommendation: These sensors are subject to occasional damage due to their position on the outer parts of the Lift Station. If they get damaged or bumped out of alignment, the S/RM will not function until they have been fixed or replaced. We recommend keeping a few on hand to ensure you are ready to replace quickly when this happens. Also, during routine maintenance, check these sensors and their respective reflectors for dirt or debris and clean as necessary, as they can sometimes lose signal due to this.

Description: The purpose of this item is to maintain the lateral tracking of the S/RM on the rail which it rides on. There are two assemblies at the front and two at the rear of an S/RM, one on either side of the rial.  It uses an eccentric roller that can be turned to adjust towards or away from the rail in order to center the S/RM front to rear for proper wear and function. 

Why it’s important: When these guide wheels become worn or fall out of proper adjustment, the S/RM will not track properly on the rail. This will lead to premature wear and stress to other components such as other guide wheels, carry and drive units and even the rail. It’s very important to ensure the S/RM is straight along its horizontal axis.

Recommendation: Making sure that this item is adjusted properly and operating within a reasonable amount of wear will avoid having to replace more costly items sooner than needed, like the horizontal drive system components and rail. We recommend taking a look at these whenever convenient or during a routine PM to ensure function. Description: Power cable that maintains connection between the home station and Satellite when the Satellite travels into the rack to retrieve pallets.  The cable supports the electricity needed for the Satellite's chain and wheel drive motor assemblies.  It has a braided stainless steel reinforced shell which provides durability, but has enough flexibility to efficiently store large lengths of cable in the home station (up to an over 65fy in some applications) that re required to stay connected to a Satellite, even when it is traveling deep into a rack.

Why it's important to the system: If this cable becomes damaged or worn, the Satellite may operate poorly, generate fault codes, and/or lose power all together.  When these problems occur, the AS/Rs system will experience downtime due to the inability to retrieve pallets via Satellite.  Since transporting and delivering pallets is the purpose of an AS/RS, this is an emergency situation.

Recommendations: Westfalia strongly recommends that customers keep a spare Satellite cable in their inventory.  This will make sure that minimal downtime is experienced when a failure occurs.  Always make sure to replenish spare stock after use by contacting the spare parts department.  One of our team member will help you determine what you need and get parts as quickly as possible.
