The Boston Globe

Conveying and Lifting Equipment Case Study

Beef Products Inc.

Heavy-duty construction makes Westfalia's conveying equipment ideal for harsh environments

The Boston Globe commissioned a full complement of Westfalia conveying and lifting equipment for its Morrissey Boulevard plant in the city of Boston.  The system, currently in operation, conveys palletized newspaper inserts between floors, expediting the processs, and resulting in increased plant efficiency.

A series of roller conveyor and turntables transports palletized inserts from a first floor receiving dock. The system then weighs the pallets, inspects the contents, and delivers them to a manned pick-up station on the third floor using high-speed vertical reciprocating conveyors or pallet lifts.  These lifts have a vertical operating rate of 400 FPM and can handle up to 120 pallets per hour.  The system also conveys pallets from a Quipp system conveyor and palletizer back to the delivery dock.  The maximum pallet weight is 3000 lbs

.

"When you have equipment that not only can handle around 120 pallets per hour, but also move them between distant floors, you can imagine how much labor is being saved," said Dan Labell, President of Westfalia Technologies, Inc.  "It is at least the equivalent of two people per shift - and the task is handled much more quickly."

System Features:

  • 24 CDLR Conveyors
  • 6 Turntables
  • 2 Vertical Pallet Lifts
  • 2 Profile Check station
  • NEMA Controls - PLC/HMI
